Comments don’t seem to mark a topic as “changed”. I'm currently sorting by Time:Newest Change and a comment I added to the “Show More Information About Users” topic doesn’t cause the topic to float to the top. The Last Change field shows that the last change was by Sinjen, 5 hours ago. Is that correct behavior?
Edit: Updated the Subject to better reflect the issue.
Does this not drive everyone else nuts? :)
Whenever I make a comment to a topic, the “Last Change” field is not updated and the topic does not sort to the top (when sorting on Time:newest change). It makes it very hard to see new activity.
Yeah comments do not count as a change. I was worried that if I made it so people would be able to bounce stuff to the top of the list too easily.
I could potentially add another sort order for this.
Sam,
Is there any way you'd consider making comments affect the Last Change field on a trial basis? I don’t post a comment or answer on every topic, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to keep up with what’s being discussed. Many users are, rightly, using the comments field more appropriately and I feel like I'm missing half the activity that’s going on. Maybe I'm just going about monitoring the wrong way. Is there a better way than viewing by All Topics sorted on Time:newest change?

Having the Last Change also include comments, will pretty much mess up the entire activity sorting.
I run through most older topics every few days, asking for status updates or “accept answer” questions. That would mean all that kind of things would also get bumped.
A seperate sortorder that includes the comment activity would be a better approach in my opinion. I believe the sortorder is stored in the UCP so that would mean you can set as default if you want to.
Besides that, I believe that you are automatically subscriped to the topic once you make a comment in it. That way you will see other activity from the topic aswell. Allthough I do think that you only get inbox notifications on comments to the same post you commented on, not comments on other posts in the topic.
If not, the you could put the checkmark at the bottom of the topic.
Hmm, I don’t see how it would mess up the sorting, just make it more accurate IMHO. I'm only talking about changing the behavior of the Time: newest change sort method. The other sorts will work exactly as they do now. The CT for many users is already very dis-orienting. There are currently 5 sort methods and the one that is the most familiar to them(think forums here), “Time: newest change” isn’t actually that as it only shows SOME of the changes :) On top of that I think the default sort for a new user is (or was) to sort by Votes: most popular. I remember first starting out on the CT and it was very hard to follow a conversation.
